Birmingham

Located in the West Midlands, Birmingham is the largest, most populous British city outside of London with an estimated population of over 1.1 million people. Historically, Birmingham was renowned for manufacturing and the important role it played in the industrial revolution, but today the city’s economy is largely dominated by the service sector. Boasting six universities, it is the largest centre of higher education outside of London and is also famous for being an important hub for transport and retail as well as events and conferences. Attracting over 34 million visitors each year, the city is the fourth most visited in the UK by foreign tourists, largely due to its internationally renowned cultural institutions – including Birmingham Royal Ballet, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Birmingham repertory Theatre – as well as the city’s vibrant grassroots arts and culinary scenes.

Birmingham has a thriving economy, and is home to many longstanding businesses as well as exciting new ventures that are cropping up all of the time. The city is widely regarded as a leading European business destination and is home to numerous international firms. Foreign direct investment is high in the area and, in 2015, the Greater Birmingham and Solihull LEP was the best performing region in terms of projects, job creation and total jobs. New figures from Birmingham City University and the ONS show that the Midlands economy, in which Birmingham is a major player, is growing almost 50% faster than the UK average, which makes the region an exciting place to do business at the moment.
